More About Timer
Contemplating what a timer is, we can say that it is a type of clock used to measure predetermined time intervals.
The word 'timer' is generally used for devices that count down from a specified time interval, whereas devices that do the opposite, i.e., measuring elapsed time by counting upwards from zero, are called stopwatches.
A simple example of a timer is an hourglass, as it already has a predefined time to finish counting. Hourglasses weren't designed to create a new level of precision, but they served a much more practical purpose: They could reliably separate periods of time. They were also cheaper and simpler to maintain than a sundial, water clock or, later, mechanical clock. For this reason, hourglasses were especially popular on warships.
As for instruments for measuring a given period of time, when discussing pre-modern clocks, the hourglass might be what most immediately comes to mind. However, hourglasses are relatively new compared to the other clocks on this list, having only appeared in records from the 1300s onwards.
Most timers give an indication that the set time interval has expired, usually with an audible alarm.
