Curiosity about Alarm Clock

With the advent of the Industrial Revolution, the British and Irish came up with a new solution: They hired a “wedge,” a human alarm clock, a professional who would use a stick or blowgun to knock on windows and wake up residents. This practice continued until the 1970s.

In 1787, American Levi Hutchins built a small wooden box around a gear that produced a chime. In the first version, it was permanently mounted and only rang at 4 a.m., the time he had to get up. Similar and earlier reports exist in Germany, and this is considered the first American alarm clock.

More than half a century later, in 1847, Frenchman Antoine Redier became the first person to patent a programmable alarm clock. However, the patent never made it across the ocean, and in 1876, American Seth E. Thomas patented his version. Programmable alarm clocks quickly became popular. By the turn of the century, the famous disc-shaped design with a bell on top was established.
